FIVE tries and five points saw Eds move up to seventh place in Midlands 1 West as they overcame a committed and sometimes brutal Banbury in a rain-lashed afternoon at Weddington Road.
Banbury, second from bottom in the league with just one win so far this campaign, came prepared to mix it and were lucky that only one yellow card came their way as their forwards, especially, were never reluctant to use their boots on grounded Eds players in an often-fierce clash.
Eds, to their credit, maintained their discipline against the strugglers' provocation and emerged well pleased with their endeavours.
Player/coach Jody Peacock said; "It was a very workmanlike performance. We have maintained our undefeated home record and just need to take that effort into our away games. Next week we are at to Camp Hill and must be looking for our first away win."
In a match dominated after the break by the results of heavy rain, Eds were first to show and after 13 minutes of sparring went ahead with a try from skipper Paul Rees, a dominant back-row presence throughout.
Flying winger Carl Hutchings made ground before prop Stewart Pearman flicked up a loose ball and Rees was there for the scoring pass. Scrum-half Tom Short converted from wide out.
Eds were well in charge and it was no surprise on 16 minutes that second-row Sam Garnham should round off a forward drive from a line-out close in to claim the try.
Short's conversion attempt was wide - his first failure since taking over the kicking role at Worcester Warriors -12-0.
Eds were enjoying most of the possession and on 22 minutes winger Ashley Kalnins went over in the corner but had put a foot in touch en route to the line.
After half an hour Eds prop David McAdam was the victim of a vicious stamp on the head by a Banbury forward, who was lucky that the referee did not see his disgraceful behaviour. A yellow card would have been less than adequate compensation.
Driving rain now swept across the ground and Banbury were fortunate not to go further behind when Hutchings hacked on a loose ball that rolled tantalisingly dead.
On 40 minutes fly-half Craig Quick, who had been enjoying himself in many lively assaults on the visitors' line, limped off with a pulled hamstring and Duncan Carter took his place.
Three minutes into injury time Banbury managed to score a try when some slick, short passing opened up the home defence and the conversion took the half-time score to 12-7.
Short had picked up a rib injury and, as the game resumed, Kalnins moved into the scrum-half slot and Adrian Giddins took his place.
Within five minutes Eds had stretched their lead to 17-7 with a slick try from Hutchings that Kalnins could not improve.
More was to come soon after when Hutchings sped into the line from the blind side and centre Peacock powered over - 22-7. Kalnins's conversion shot bounced back off a post.
Eds were now enjoying their most productive period and on 11 minutes the Banbury defence hesitated, expecting a whistle for a knock-on which never came, and Hutchings was away for his second try to make the score 27-7.
McAdam now gave way for Adam Wilson in the front row as the wet and greasy ball spoiled some promising moves by the increasingly-confident home side.
Banbury's continued use of the boot on prone Eds players continued to bring howls of protest from the home supporters and when, on 37 minutes, a Banbury replacement was yellow-carded the general opinion was about time, too.
Five minutes before the end Eds full-back Dane Calcunovitch took a knee on his cheek and was later led away for a trip to hospital to deal with a disturbing swelling.
Banbury, to their credit, never gave up the fight and it took some stern defence from Eds to stop them adding to their earlier score as time ran out.
