AT LAST - a win to cheer Old Eds supporters, the first since early December, and one which could cement their place in the Midlands 1 West league.
For once, a determination to spin the ball wide and let the backs off the leash proved the right tactics for the Weddington Road side as they gave a game but limited basement side Cheltenham North a lesson in finishing.
Leading 32-7 at the break and looking likely to be heading for a big points difference, Old Eds provided some anxious moments in the second half but eventually stretched away to win in some comfort.
A clearly relieved Eds coach, Paul Vowles, said after the game: "I thought we played some good rugby in parts. The ground drying out certainly helped us and allowed us to move the ball about.
"The second half was slightly awry but overall we got the win we needed. It keeps us in touch with the bottom pack."
Eds were out of the blocks from the start and within three minutes had established a lead they were never to lose.
Flanker Stuart Holes, as dynamic as ever, grabbed the first try in a forward pushover and although centre Jody Peacock could not improve it, he was to play an influential part in the ultimate destruction of the Gloucestershire side.
On seven minutes Eds were up 10-0 when winger Sven Brown rounded off a cool piece of back play to score an unconverted try wide out.
Somewhat against the flow Cheltenham hit back with a converted try to make it 10-7 and this shook Eds into action with another well-worked try. Stand-off Duncan Carter slipped the ball to Peacock, who saw full-back Adam Jones steaming up in support and his speed took him clear to register Eds' third unconverted try.
Cheltenham's No.8 was earning the referee's displeasure by going over the top in mauls and it was no surprise on the half-hour when he did it once too often and was shown a yellow card.
A minute later Carter strolled through a non-existent Cheltenham defence to touch down near the posts and improve his try himself. His conversion took Eds to 22-7.
Matt Collins was having a majestic time in the line-outs for Eds, winning the ball with ease, and on 39 minutes Cheltenham defence was nowhere as Brown nonchalantly strolled in at the corner for his second try.
Carter superbly-struck touchline conversion saw Eds 29-7 up and he then landed a penalty from distance to give his side a 32-7 cushion at the break.
Cheltenham had clearly been given a tongue-lashing at half-time and came out much more positively.
Ben Gilbert had replaced Jones at full-back and, although the visitors reduced the arrears to 32-12 with a try, on 23 minutes he sped into the line, handed on to Peacock, and saw winger Ashley Kalnins race in for another unconverted try - 37-12.
Cheltenham were now desperate to fight back but some poor handling restricted their chances and it was no surprise when replacement back-row man Adey Nightingale crossed for an unconverted try.
As the game went into extra time, Cheltenham took advantage of a midfield error to race away for a converted try and complete the scoring.
Too little, too late for a side surely doomed to the drop.
On Saturday Eds are away to high-riding Dudley Kingswinford - a tough encounter indeed.

Gilbert’s delivers death kick justice for 2’s.

2’s friendly with Old Newtonians 1’s presented an opportunity to introduce new faces to the Edwardians, the squad that travelled down the A47 included prop forward Dave “Jessie” Macadam, flanker Nick Gilbert, half backs Ollie Smith and Tom Rowbottom plus old boys big Greeny and “Chip Shop” Charlie Wilson.
On a heavy pitch the home side started confidently and had the Edwardians defence was under pressure for the first 15 minutes of the game. The visitor’s defensive line was not broken and after a slow start confidence grew and the game was taken to the Old Newts.
After 20 minutes the unfortunate Tony George was replaced by hooker Sam Wilson, Rob Lapsley moved from hooker to loose head prop. This gave the front row a more balanced look and the front row of Lapsley, Wilson and Jessie had the home side on the back foot at the set piece.
The momentum had changed Woodcock pace chasing kicks from deep in his own half was the first of a number of bright moments for the visitors and the home side realised they had problems to cope with from all 15 of the visitors who had gone up several gears from a slow start. Crisp passing from Fly half by Ollie Smith released the centres on a couple of occasions who may have had more successful if the ball was kept in hand rather than the kick and chase in the red zone. The half finished 0-0 with the visitors looking very competitive.
This was a development game and all that travelled would play which was in itself a challenge to the squad to maintain the competitive edge with all the planned second half changes.
Ben Gilbert replaced Steve Commane, Wally moved to the Wing and Gilbert went to full back his elder brother Nick replaced Jon Cox, Ross moved from blind side to 8.
Chip shop replaced Cotty in the second row and Matt Green replace Jessie at tight head. The changes did take a little time to settle and a little pressure from the home side was rewarded by a penalty in front of the posts which was converted.
Whitehouse and Fielding had a few interesting exchanges with the Newts as the competitive edge started to spill over and the 2’s had a few lessons in gamesmanship by there more streetwise opponents.
As the game wore on the Eds came close several times the most disappointing was the ball knocked from Whitehouse hand by the flanker at a 5 metre scrum.
More changes were made Robottom replaced Woodcock and Cape replaced Krauth.
The game was being played inside the homes sides half, the referee had called last play, Newts infringed at the ruck and a penalty was awarded. Whitehouse took a quick tap which caught Newts cold, and they conceded another penalty for not retreating 10 metres.
The Chance was now on the penalty was mid field on the 22 yard line and up stepped Ben Gilbert who calmly slotted between the sticks with the last kick of the game which was the least the 2’s deserved for a strong squad performance.

TWO days after marking their centenary, Old Eds had little to celebrate on the field after this latest defeat left them with time running out in the fight to retain their league status.
This match was scheduled as an away fixture but, with Camp Hill's Birmingham pitch unplayable, it was switched to Weddington. And, on a muddy, cloying and clinging pitch, it was the visitors who emerged the stronger from a game which did little to warm the spectators.
Old Eds enjoyed territorial supremacy and forward domination for much of the encounter, especially in the second half, but their insistence in keeping the ball tight among the forwards and trying to score pushover tries proved their undoing.
As it was, the backs saw next to nothing of the ball and could only stand and watch as their forwards' efforts came up short.
Camp Hill's defence held firm throughout the torrid second period and in the end it was another disappointing and frustrating afternoon for Eds.
Three Eds kickers, centre Jody Peacock, fly-half Duncan Carter and full-back Ben Gilbert, all tried their luck at goal but none could match the efforts of the Camp Hill centre, who landed three impressive shots out of the mud.
Eds coach Paul Vowles was in no mood to make excuses as he said: "We were totally inept. Our decision-making at half-back was poor. The effort was there but we were just not making the right decisions anywhere in a pretty poor performance.
"Camp Hill were not a great side but they had plenty of heart. It makes you wonder where our points are coming from."
It had all looked so simple at the start. Eds were pressing on the Camp Hill line and after 12 minutes the visitors were down to 14 men when a prop was yellow-carded. Eds took advantage and acting skipper No.8 Paul Rees was the man with the ball as the forwards drove over for a try. Peacock's kick from wide out fell short.
An eager referee was now giving a succession of penalties against Eds and on 15 minutes Camp Hill cut the deficit with the first of their three successful shots at goal.
Soon after, and still with only 14 men, they went ahead with penalty after Eds strayed offside and conceded another 10 metres for mouthing.
Before half time it was 9-5 to Camp Hill with another well-struck effort out of the mud.
There was just time for the visitors to have their other prop yellow-carded for a ruck offence before the half-time whistle.
Soon after the resumption Rees became the third man in the sin-bin for a loose-maul offence but Eds now began their forward assault on the Camp Hill line which was to prove ultimately fruitless.
Eds battered away close in for long periods but just could not turn territory into tries.
On 12 minutes Carter was short with a kickable penalty and five minutes later Gilbert tried his luck and was similarly lacking.
On 22 minutes Jon Budgen took over in the front row from Tom Simpson and his clean shirt was soon as muddy as his colleagues' on a grim and grimy afternoon.
It was all Eds as the forwards fought for a match-winning try against a stern defence.
With time running out Greg Way took over from Gilbert and Eds mounted their final assault close in. A succession of scrums looked likely to lead to a late clincher but Camp Hill stole possession and were happy to find touch and grab the spoils from another poor afternoon for Eds.
On Saturday mid-table side Stratford are the visitors to Weddington and Eds will need to be on top of their game in the fight to maintain Midlands 1 West league status.

LEAGUE leaders brewery town Burton, with Pedigree stamped on their shirts and the same on their silky skills, handed out a 10-try thumping to an Old Eds side who never gave up against a vastly superior outfit.
Up front Eds, with hooker Stuart Gibson always prominent, fought hard to contain the big Burton pack but the home side backs were never able to contain a rampant display from the visitors.
If the Burton goalkicker had managed to improve more than just two of the 10 tries then the margin of defeat could have been even greater.
This latest Midlands 1 West league setback for Eds leaves them struggling in the lower rungs. And with some difficult away games to come they are going to pull some unlikely victories out of the hat to avoid a messy scrap for survival.
Saturday's away game at Camp Hill, below Eds in the table, will be a vital four-pointer.
Coach Paul Vowles was typically frank in his assessment of this defeat when he said: "I can't fault the lads for their efforts. We had a better points difference than the sides around us but Burton have upset that today.
"They just had too much pace for us and it was a bit embarrassing in the end."
Burton's intentions were clear from the start and they wasted no time in getting the ball out wide as quickly as they could.
The result was that after 17 minutes they had run in three unconverted tries before Eds had settled into any kind of rhythm.
For the rest of the first half, however, the Weddington road side had more than their share of possession in the mauls and for one lengthy period pounded away at the visitors' line and came close to driving over a number of times.
Eds had done well to prevent Burton adding to that early 15-0 lead before the break but after turning around it was a different story as the league leaders ran in another eight tries, two of them converted, in a display of open rugby that even the most committed home supporters had to admire - if not enjoy.
In the forwards, second row pair Sam Garnham and John Wayte never gave up the fight and flanker Matt Collins won plenty of ball in the line-out. Replacement prop Adam Wilson also caught the eye with some dashing charges.
Ashley Kalnins, back on the wing after a run in the centre at Stoke the week before, put in some storming runs but could not break the shackles of an organised Burton defence.
For the last 10 minutes Eds were down to 14 men when centre Ricky Hyslop limped off with a knee injury and there were no more replacements available from the bench.
From this point Burton were in total control and took their tally from 29-0 ahead to 54 with storming and unstoppable back play that produced another five unimproved scores.
It was a sobering lesson for Eds, who celebrate the club's centenary on Thursday.

Edwardians fall to Broadstreet

With two games at home the 2’s moved to the smaller second team pitch which was soft underfoot.
The home side started well with the forwards on top, Street were lucky to survive a number of close drives at the line, with one going over and deemed held up by the referee. The visitors slowly gained a foothold in the game and had the majority of the territory in the first half testing the home sides defence.
The games only try was an intercept from the base of the scrum when Streets scrum half took a ball from the Eds 8 Jon Cox who was attempting to feed his scrum half Pittam. The street scrum half had been allowed to become a real issue to the ball at the base of the scrum and players and spectators surprised with how the referee was managing this area of the game. Congratulations to the Street scrum half but when Pittam was penalised for being in the same are in the second half the consistency of some decisions was being questioned, but as always it was the same for both sides.
Street converted a penalty to take a 10 nil lead at half time.
Second half very even, both sides had chances but the excellent defensive from both sides shut out the tries and one penalty each was taken by each side.
Final score 3 – 13.
This was the 2’s first defeat in the league this season, Street had the edge in this one but it was close and a very competitive game played in a good spirit. A great advertisement for the standard of rugby played in Warwickshire 1.
Special mention for Adam Jones who tactical kicking had Street under pressure in the second half.
2’s can still come out top of Warwickshire 1 but they can not afford any slip ups.

DEPLETED Old Eds tumbled to another depressing defeat as Stoke made hay in the unseasonal Staffordshire sunshine.
Back in September Eds had handed out a 33-7 thumping to their fellow Midlands 1 West league strugglers but on Saturday it was Stoke's turn to grab the welcome points.
Ski-ing holidays and the alternative attraction of Twickenham had robbed Eds of a number of influential players and they were made to pay dearly in an unconvincing performance punctuated by some woeful passing, especially among the backs.
On numerous occasions they saw promising moves come to grief as passes hit the ground or flew out of reach of waiting hands.
In wingers Jake Woodcock, debutant Sam Brennan and later replacement James Wilson, Eds had all the pace needed but seemed incapable of spreading the ball wide to give them the opportunities they craved.
One bright spot on a sad day was the performance of another new man, full-back Ben Gilbert, who scored both Eds tries in an assured display.
With coach Paul Vowles unavailable to supervise his charges, second team supremo Pete Banwell stepped up in his place and was in no doubt that Eds could have done so much better.
He said: "The first half was OK but we just needed quick ball and a number of individual errors let us down. The platform was there for us to win but chances early in the second half were wasted.
"On the positive side, we had a lot of young players out there today and the future is looking good."
After early exchanges among the forwards, with neither side able to gain dominance, Eds broke away and Brennan showed his paces and raced towards the home line only to be brought down short.
It was a hint that Eds unfortunately failed to appreciate as neither he nor fellow winger Woodcock were to see much ball throughout.
Stoke's big but ponderous pack were giving Eds plenty of problems but on the half-hour the visitors went ahead with the first of Gilbert's brace. He joined the line and dived over for a try which he was unable to improve himself and the sparse away support sat back expecting more.
However, two minutes later Stoke hit back with a converted try after some hesitant Eds defence let them through.
Before the break Stoke were 10-5 up with a penalty from some distance.
It was all Eds as the second half began and the Stoke line was under siege for some time. Gilbert missed a penalty attempt from distance before a melee among the forwards saw the home hooker and Eds forward Matt Collins get a stern lecture from the referee and the former a yellow card.
On 13 minutes Craig Court took over at prop from Adam Wilson and soon after Stoke went 13-5 up with another penalty.
Sam Wilson now replaced hooker from Stuart Gibson and another penalty saw Stoke widen the gap to 16-5 and on 20 minutes they were cruising at 19-5 with another penalty.
Eds were not out of contention, however, and Gilbert made the overlap to score his second try and although he missed the conversion the visitors were now back in it at 19-10.
Gibson rejoined the fray on 27 minutes by taking over at prop from Adam Wilson but there were no more opportunities for Eds to snatch a belated victory and Stoke held out for a victory they must have thought unlikely after their earlier defeat.
On Saturday league leaders Burton are the visitors at Weddington. Eds will need to be at their very best to take something from this one.

DEEP into second-half injury time, with Old Eds trailing by just two points, big centre Jody Peacock had a penalty chance to steal victory against Walsall.
But on a pitch churned into a quagmire after Friday's heavy rain he could only watch as his effort sailed agonisingly wide of the posts and Walsall could breathe again.
In a game of three distinct phases, Eds trailed 10-0 at one time, came back strongly to grab a half-time lead at 17-10 but were second best for most of the second half, when Walsall scored 12 points to the home side's three.
This latest defeat leaves Eds worryingly near the bottom of the Midlands 1 West league table with some testing games ahead.
Coach Paul Vowles was in no doubt that the next few weeks could be decisive. He said: "We need to start picking up a few wins or we will be in a relegation battle.
"Defensively we played really well. They had a lot of the play in the second half but we had a chance to win the game and we fluffed it.
"The conditions were poor but they were the same for both sides. This was a big improvement on last week, especially in our defence."
On the plus side for Eds were an assured performance at centre from Sven Brown, some determined running by winger Ashley Kalnins, who scored two tries, and the pack, as a unit, who never gave less than their all on a strength-sapping pitch.
Eds were behind as early as the first minute, when they conceded a penalty close in and Walsall gratefully accepted the chance to go ahead.
On 15 minutes Peacock was short with a long-range penalty shot and two minutes later a telegraphed pass was intercepted by a Walsall back and he streaked away, leaving Eds full-back Adam Jones with no chance of bringing him down. A simple conversion took Walsall 10 points clear.
Eds were now entering the best phase of the afternoon and scrum-half Paul Mitchell fed quickly to fly-half Greg Way. Jones had joined the line and he passed on to Brown, who stormed through his opposite number and Kalnins was up with him to tear around under the posts and give Peacock the easiest of kicks - 10-7 to Walsall.
The visitors rallied briefly but there was no denying Eds and on the half-hour a break by centre Ricky Hyslop gave Kalnins the chance to hack the ball over the Walsall line and win the race for the touchdown. Peacock's conversion shot was wide but Eds were now 12-10 ahead and looking good.
Two minutes into injury time their superiority was emphasised by a controlled forward drive over the Walsall line and No.8 Paul Rees was the man to make the score and give the home side a 17-10 half-time lead.
It was a different story in the second half and Walsall dominated for long periods. Heroic defence kept them out for 15 minutes, when sustained pressure on the Eds line resulted in an unconverted try to make it 17-15.
Eds fought back and after being laid out in a tackle on 20 minutes Peacock got up to fire over a penalty and put Eds 20-15 in the lead.
Five minutes later Eds flanker Rob Tweed was yellow-carded for a maul infringement and an injury to front-row replacement Tom Simpson resulted in uncontested scrums.
One man down, Eds were now forced back to their own line and on 32 minutes Walsall grabbed an inevitable try to level at 20-20.
The conversion attempt hit the crossbar before falling over the take Walsall into the lead.
Then came that dramatic moment as injury-time minutes seeped away. Eds drove play to the Walsall line and when the referee awarded them a penalty comfortably close for Peacock to win the game it looked as if they would snatch the points.
Players and home supporters alike could only stand and hope but Peacock's vital shot sailed wide.
On Saturday Eds are away to Bournville, second it the table. A takeover of another kind at the home of Cadbury becomes increasingly important.

10 Try haul for 2s at Barkers

Edwardians 2s travelled to Barkers Butts for their first game since the 12th of December. The visitors were able to field a strong side with a number of players pushing for first team call up. Team - front row of Banwell , (Sam) Wilson and Cannon, second row of Hall and Cotterill and back row of Holes, Collins and Cox. The returning Pittam was at scrum half with Carter at fly half and centres of KP, and Walton. Wings Commane and (James) Wilson with Woodcock at Full back and Gilbert on the bench.

The home fixture earlier in the season had witnessed the 2s log up over 100 points against Barkers and a backlash was expected from the boys from Coventry. If Eds players were not aware of the threat they were given an early wake up call. From a scrum mid way in the visitors half the back row broke away and offloaded in tackle to the centre who speed across the line to give the home side the early advantage.

The try boosted the home sides confidence and the forwards on both sides held nothing back in the exchanges that were fair and full of commitment. Eds had to earn every yard up front and starting to have the better of the exchanges. When the ball was released wide the home side were stretched and it was not long before a combination of rucks and moving the ball wide had the home side defence stretched to its limit. Sam Wilson was first to score after a break by Jon Cox, Carter converted from wide. Pita scored soon after following more good work from the forwards and again Carter converted from wide out.

Eds were flying and Walton crashed over in the centre of the field, which gave the visitors a 5 19 advantage. The home side were next to score that was a fortunate break, as the referee had not seen James Wilson pulled back off the ball that allowed the winger to score in the corner. The try added a little spice to the game and with the Eds forwards well on top in the set piece and the backs having quality ball it was only a matter of time before the Eds scored there 4th try of the half Sam Wilson going over for his second of the afternoon. This was followed by a fifth try when Woodc*ck crashed through a number of defenders to score. Half time was called as the backs threaten to throw more than handbags and the forwards joined the party. Eds had a 10 29 lead and both sides had a few mins to cool down.

Second half saw Gilbert replace Commane and 5 more tries for the visitors as the backs cut holes in the visitors defence KP was the first to score and then with the Eds under pressure in there 22 the ball was intercepted by Gilbert who sprinted to the opposition 22, drew the cover and passed to James Wilson to touch down under the posts, Wilson drop kicked the conversion to make the score 10 41.

The best try of the afternoon followed a break from Banwell deep in the 22 wide right he ball passed to Woodcock who took the ball to half way, the ball was spun inside through a number of pairs of hands at pace with the ball ending up in the hands of Holes who scored in the opposite corner of the field from were the move had started.

Eds were well on top an amusing maul infringement by Barkers who had two players penalised for offside positioned at the back of the Eds driving maul in a desperate attempt to stop the forwards inevitable try. This demonstrated the dominance the forwards had created. A quick tap penalty from 5 metres and Cox took the breath away from the opposition defence to make the score 10 51. Barkers Captain at this stage requested an early finish having a number of walking wounded and 5mins was taken off the game time. Wilson scored soon after and the Referee ended the game leaving Gilbert to convert with the last kick of the game.

Final score 10 58.
