Nuneaton Colts in National Cup Final - 5th May
Nuneaton Colts have reached the National Cup Final and are playing against Bedford, the reigning champions, on bank Holiday Monday 5th May. The game is at Franklins Gardens, Northampton and kicks off at 3pm. The Plate Final between Newbury and Bishops Stortford is at 1pm. There are several coaches going from Nuneaton RFC and many more cars. If seats on the coaches are required, please leave your name behind the bar at the Nuns.
The Nuneaton Colts Head Coach is Chris Southall, who as well as having served Nuneaton with distinction, also played 39 games for the Eds. The work done by everyone connected with nurturing the town's young players is crucial to the survival of rugby at all levels in Nuneaton and we are confident that the Eds appreciate this and will give maximum support. On that note NOERFC wishes Chris, the rest of the coaching staff and especially the players our congratulations on getting this far and our best wishes for the final itself.

Midland Play Offs
Saturday, 26 April 2008
M2W v M2E
Hereford 13 - 43 Hinckley
M3E(N) v M3E(S)
Leighton Buzzard 16 - 15 Spalding
M3W(S) v M3W(N)
Droitwich 3 - 18 Stoke on Trent
M6E(NW) v M6E(NE)
Leesbrook 50 - 10 Ollerton
M6W(SE) v M6W(SW)
Coventrians 27 - 0 Clee Hill
As you can see Droitwich lost the play off for a place in Midlands 2 West, so with 2 teams coming down in to our league (Newbold and Barkers Butts) and only 1 team going up (Sutton Coldfield), it looks like there will be some sort of rearrangement next year with at least one team moving over to a parallel league. Watch this space...

A BATTLING performance by Old Eds could not prevent Sutton Coldfield clinching the league title in a season that saw them defeated only once.
But Eds made sure that before the tickertape was fired into the air at the end of the game, the home side had been made to compete for every yard and every point.
There is no doubt that Sutton were the best side in the league and go up worthy champions.
What disappointed me, however, was the jeering, sneering conduct once again of a mindless section of their "supporters" who came unprepared to recognise the fact that two committed sides were in competition.
Instead they contented themselves with baying at mistakes and complaining if refereeing decisions were not always in their favour in a one-eyed exhibition that does themselves no credit.
Next season their side face many more sterner challenges than they encountered on Saturday and deserve more than they get from a mindless mob.
Eds began the game with the howling wind slightly in their favour and for the first 20 minutes were camped firmly around the home 22 but were unable to turn territory into points.
Sutton at last began to retaliate and on the half-hour it took some sterling defence to keep them out.
The first of a number of changes Eds had to make through injury came soon after when prop Craig Court was forced off with a hand injury and Tom Simpson took his place.
Just before the break flanker Stuart Holes was yellow-carded for getting offside once to often.
In the first minute of added time Sutton opened the scoring when their full-back, always a handful, rounded off a slick move to score an unconverted try.
Before the break skipper and scrum-half Paul Mitchell injured an ankle and was replaced by Scott Pittam.
Now facing the elements, Eds made further after centre Matt Steele was hurt. Winger Pete Walton moved inside, flanker Rob Tweed went out to the wing and Mark Mitchell came into the back row.
With Holes still languishing under the posts Sutton scored again. It was the full-back who fizzed into the line to dot down under the posts for a converted try which put Sutton 12-0 up.
Eds were now on the back foot and after 12 minutes they conceded a pushover try which went unconverted to trail 17-0.
The visitors, however, were far from subdued and Simpson and prop Richie Evans were often prominent in some impressive charges.
Their efforts were rewarded on 16 minutes when Mitchell was the man in possession as Eds drove over for an unconverted try.
Sutton went 20-5 up with a penalty in front of the posts on 25 minutes but the Eds line was never under threat again.
For the last 15 minutes they looked the better side as they enjoyed both possession and territory.
Another defeat for Eds indeed - but no one could fault their commitment as the league programme ended with them comfortably placed near the middle of the table.

Eds 3rds were no match for Sutton Coldfield, and showed that their fitness levels were far better than that of the Eds, as they ran in a mass of tries against a sometimes static defence.
Again the 3s were somewhat lacking for the first 20minutes and with only 14 players aboard the funbus, Sutton were accommodating in lending the Eds a fullback, who proved to be an asset with some good tackling and running for the 3s.
It wasn't until late in the 1st half when the Eds finally used the limited possession that they had which saw J. Scott go rampaging through a Sutton defence shrugging off challenges from all sides only to be brought down metres from the line. However quick thinking saw M. Gardener pick up the loose ball and make his first try for the Eds.
The second half brought on a few changes to the Eds lineup due to injuries moving P. Mayell into the back row (neck) and M. Gardener onto the front row, M. Evans into Scrumhalf and Spyda (Hamstring) onto the wing, much to the joy of the Sutton winger who's remark of 'pass to me and I'll run past the cripple' were duly noted by S. Paton as he failed to get past Spyda for the remainder of the game.
The 3's defence in the 2nd half was much better as most of the half was played in their 22, and with thoughts turning to the funbus and fines night the Eds duly let in a few more tries.
M. Evans again had a good game at 12 and only narrowly missed another MOTM Award to J. Scott who's game seems to be getting better and better each week. It's just a shame that it's the end of the season.
