The next Tens Tournament takes place on Sunday 4th May 2008

The objective of the Tens is simple: enjoyment. There are no league points at stake, no relegation or promotion to worry about, rather it is an opportunity to enjoy Rugby as it always has been - in the company of like-minded players and supporters.

The Old Eds are proud to host the Tens and hope that the combination of competitive matches, a drink with members of other clubs and the after match 'entertainment' helps to end the season on a high note.

Please note that Warwickshire RFU insist that there be no bottles/glassware outside of the clubhouse.

Look back at the Tens 2007

Yet again the gods of the weather smiled on the Old Eds as their 14th annual tens tournament was played out in sunny, if cool, conditions. Fifteen mens and seven Ladies teams battled it out to win the £500 first prize awarded to the winners of each section.

The day ran smoothly and the Finals arrived in record time in spite of the unavailability of the levelled and re-seeded second team pitch. It meant that much of the focus of the early rounds of the day was over the hedge, but all three pitches were well supported and the Finals all took place on the clubhouse pitch to provide a fitting finale to a great day of rugby.

There were some memorable games of rugby played, especially the semi-final between 27TFR and Ronin Impact, two strong sides both of whom included players from the higher reaches of the leagues. 27TFR ran out winners by 12 points to 10.

It is interesting to see how the standard of Ladies football has improved over the 14 years of the competition and the eventual winners of the main competition Worcester played their usual brand of exciting running rugby. Worcester ladies finished third in the RFUW Premiership division one last season and are therefore considered one of the finest women’s rugby teams in the country. They were pushed all the way in the final by Camphill Ladies who were the winners this season of the Midlands One ladies league and who despite playing a team from a higher division in the leagues fought magnificently. Ronin Freespirit, another free running exciting ladies team, won the Plate final.

The men’s plate final was contested between Old Eds and the Handy Hoods. The Handy Hoods are a Nun’s Colts team who are named in memory of young Nuneaton player Andy Hood who was tragically killed in a road accident some 16 months ago. It is a tribute to their ability and spirit that they can compete successfully against men’s teams. What they lack in physique they more than make up for in speed, stamina and spirit.

The men’s final was between 27TFR and St Mary’s, a college team from London. 27TFR were the team of the tournament and although St Mary’s battled bravely they lacked the class to really trouble 27TFR. The man of the match award was won by St Mary’s Rory De’mant who despite being on the losing side never gave up tackling and running all game.

Vaughan ‘Hoss’ King, a stalwart member of the Old Eds who died of cancer earlier this year was remembered by a team calling themselves the VK Legends. Both of Vaughan’s sons played for the team and they were supported by a number of Fylde players and some from the Old Eds. Unfortunately they failed to qualify for the later stages of the competition but have vowed to return to avenge their defeats of this year. Vaughan’s widow Wendy presented a rose-bowl to the winning team in memory of Vaughan.

At the end of the day the President of “The Dog Brothers” made his annual address to the people of Nuneaton extolling the virtues of the town, the joys of tens rugby and the benefits of clean living.

Worcester Blues ran out worthy winners of the Ladies competition, beating Whitney Angels who impressed on their route to the final.

DMU Vipers and the Dog Brothers put on a fantastic Men’s Final that swung one way than the other only for Vipers to win a close match that will be talked about for years.
