AT LAST - a win to cheer Old Eds supporters, the first since early December, and one which could cement their place in the Midlands 1 West league.
For once, a determination to spin the ball wide and let the backs off the leash proved the right tactics for the Weddington Road side as they gave a game but limited basement side Cheltenham North a lesson in finishing.
Leading 32-7 at the break and looking likely to be heading for a big points difference, Old Eds provided some anxious moments in the second half but eventually stretched away to win in some comfort.
A clearly relieved Eds coach, Paul Vowles, said after the game: "I thought we played some good rugby in parts. The ground drying out certainly helped us and allowed us to move the ball about.
"The second half was slightly awry but overall we got the win we needed. It keeps us in touch with the bottom pack."
Eds were out of the blocks from the start and within three minutes had established a lead they were never to lose.
Flanker Stuart Holes, as dynamic as ever, grabbed the first try in a forward pushover and although centre Jody Peacock could not improve it, he was to play an influential part in the ultimate destruction of the Gloucestershire side.
On seven minutes Eds were up 10-0 when winger Sven Brown rounded off a cool piece of back play to score an unconverted try wide out.
Somewhat against the flow Cheltenham hit back with a converted try to make it 10-7 and this shook Eds into action with another well-worked try. Stand-off Duncan Carter slipped the ball to Peacock, who saw full-back Adam Jones steaming up in support and his speed took him clear to register Eds' third unconverted try.
Cheltenham's No.8 was earning the referee's displeasure by going over the top in mauls and it was no surprise on the half-hour when he did it once too often and was shown a yellow card.
A minute later Carter strolled through a non-existent Cheltenham defence to touch down near the posts and improve his try himself. His conversion took Eds to 22-7.
Matt Collins was having a majestic time in the line-outs for Eds, winning the ball with ease, and on 39 minutes Cheltenham defence was nowhere as Brown nonchalantly strolled in at the corner for his second try.
Carter superbly-struck touchline conversion saw Eds 29-7 up and he then landed a penalty from distance to give his side a 32-7 cushion at the break.
Cheltenham had clearly been given a tongue-lashing at half-time and came out much more positively.
Ben Gilbert had replaced Jones at full-back and, although the visitors reduced the arrears to 32-12 with a try, on 23 minutes he sped into the line, handed on to Peacock, and saw winger Ashley Kalnins race in for another unconverted try - 37-12.
Cheltenham were now desperate to fight back but some poor handling restricted their chances and it was no surprise when replacement back-row man Adey Nightingale crossed for an unconverted try.
As the game went into extra time, Cheltenham took advantage of a midfield error to race away for a converted try and complete the scoring.
Too little, too late for a side surely doomed to the drop.
On Saturday Eds are away to high-riding Dudley Kingswinford - a tough encounter indeed.
